In 1863 the Dunedin postmaster requisitioned a local firm Messrs Ferguson and Mitchell to perforate stamps on the star watermarked and unwatermarked pelure papers. They were perforated with a line machine with a guage of "13".  These perforations are regularily found mis-placed due to the perforation process.

Care must be taken in identification of these stamps from the more common perforation "12.5", the perforations must be a full perforation "13" on all sides. The best guage is to check against a stamp that was only perforated "12.5", such as the 4d Rose.
