Chalon Specimen Overprints
1884 - 1d Imperforate

The New Zealand Specimens a specialist feild in themselves. There are 4 Types (A, B, C, D).  I am keen for someone to tell me the history of these stamps, why they overprinted and what was the intended purpose?
- The type "A" the handstamp measures 14.5mm x 2.25mm and can be found in purple, violet and mauve or shades of and in blue.
- The type "B" the handstamp measures 15mm x 1.5mm and can be found in purple, red and blue.
- The type "C" the handstamp measures 11mm x 1.0mm and can be found in purple and bright red.
- The type "D" the handstamp measures 15.75mm x 2.0mm and can be found in deep blue.
I believe this to be a 1d Orange reprint imperforate example (1884) with a Type "B" possibily a Type "D" overprint in blue. The problem being the measurements fit more closely "D" being 15.75mm x 2.0mm, but the print type and the stamp it is on do not match.  It may be a fake as the sizing of the overprint and the colour do not match known combinations
I reckon the measurements are 15.75mm x 1.75mm. The Type "B" measurement should be 15.0mm x 1.5mm on a 1d reprint of (1884), watermark large star, worn plate. The book (Postage Stamps of New Zealand) suggests it only comes in (a) or (c) and I reckon it is (d) blue and horizontal?
